Culture of remembrance and teaching democracy with games (fully booked)
Training
How can digital games be used to bring historical events to life and promote democratic values? This training is aimed at teachers, educators and mediators who are looking for new ways to integrate remembrance culture and democracy education into their own teaching or mediation contexts. Together, participants will explore how games can be used as a medium to teach topics such as democracy, human rights and history in an interactive and sustainable way.
The following three approaches will be presented and tested:
Remember. Kinder vom Bullenhuser Damm (Markus Bassermann, Stiftung Hamburger Gedenkstätten)
At this station, participants experience how the digital game "Remember. The Children of Bullenhuser Damm" interactively conveys the work of remembrance. They will explore how the game encourages young people to discover historical traces and develop a personal perspective on remembrance, and learn how games can be used as a sensitive medium for dealing with NS crimes.
Games in history lessons (Lucas Haasis, University of Oldenburg)
Lucas Haasis will present methods for using games that deal with topics related to the First and Second World Wars. Participants can get an impression of the games at the station and learn about concepts for using games in history classes.
Promoting Democracy with Games (Veit Hartung, Medienzentrum Parabol)
At this station, participants can try out several small games, including Hidden Codes and Bad News, that deal with aspects of political education. Together we will discuss how these and other games can be used in workshops to playfully convey content and values to school classes and other youth groups.
